Kashmar is a city located in the province of Razavi Khorasan in the northeast of Iran. Kashmar is located near the river Sish Taraz in the western part of the province, and 135 miles south of the province’s capital Mashad. Kashmar is known to produce some of the highest quality carpets coming out of the eastern part of Iran. A distinguishing feature of Kashmar rugs is their truly unique floral and pictorial designs. Kashmar rugs depict tales of major events or important historical figures. They may include items of cultural significance, special buildings, garden scenes, or symbolic representations like the Tree of Life. Kase Boshghab (bowl and plate), Case Kozeh (bowl and flowerpot), Zir Khaki (means “under the earth” and refers to designs that depict archeological artifacts found in Iran such as vases and other ornaments with designs of birds), Lachak Toranj (medallion and corner design) are all famous designs that Kashmar rugs are famous for. Older Kashmar rugs will be primarily light blue and cream. The more recent Kashmar rugs feature navy blues, light blues, greens, reds, rusts, beiges, ivories, and browns. The knot count in these rugs usually starts from 100 KPSI, normally woven on a cotton foundation with a wool pile. These rugs are very durable, and with magnificent designs, beautiful color combinations, these rugs are truly one of a kind works of art and are to be treasured.
